Disable Avast Antivirus temporarily or permanently

Avast Antivirus is one of the most popular free antivirus programs on the market, but there are times when you’ll want to disable or uninstall it temporarily or permanently. For example, if you’re planning to install another antivirus program such as Norton or McAfee, you should disable Avast before making the switch and then uninstall it later. You might also need to turn off Avast if you’re having issues with the program or your computer and need to use another antivirus program temporarily while troubleshooting the problem.

Disabling Avast in Windows

If you’re using Windows, you can disable Avast in two ways: system-wide and application-specific. System-wide disables your entire security suite, whereas application-specific disables just one feature of a suite like SecureLine VPN. The latter is usually more convenient for users who only want some features enabled at a time. For example, if you only need SafeZone browsing but not SecureLine VPN access, then enabling it on a per-feature basis is ideal. Here’s how to do both.

You’ll need administrative privileges to access these options. If you have an Avast Account, log in with your username and password to make changes. Otherwise, click Manage my licenses if you have a Premium license and Manage my subscriptions if you have a Free license and then choose My Products from the sidebar.

The first method, disabling your entire security suite via Windows Settings, is ideal if you have a Windows 10 PC. On versions of Windows prior to 10, you can still access some options in Settings; however, it’s best to use Control Panel for complete control over your Avast installation. Click Start > Settings > Update & Security and choose Recovery from the sidebar.

Uninstalling Avast in Windows

To uninstall Avast in Windows follow these steps: open Add/Remove Programs, select Avast and click Uninstall. You will be asked if you want to restart your computer when you are done uninstalling. Choose Yes. When your computer restarts it will no longer have Avast installed. This is a good time to check for any viruses on your system before installing another antivirus program (see Scanning for viruses below).

If you are having problems uninstalling, you can use Revo Uninstaller (free) to uninstall Avast. This is an additional program that needs to be downloaded, but it gives you more control over how programs get removed from your computer. Uninstall any other antivirus software you have installed and then run Revo Uninstaller by following these steps

When you get to Start –> Programs, select Revo Uninstaller and click Run. A program dialog box will pop up, listing all of your installed programs. Scroll down to find avast! antivirus 6 or 7 (this is where it may vary by operating system). Check off that entry and then click Remove. Once you have confirmed you want to remove it, a pop-up box will ask if you want to uninstall in Normal Mode or Extreme Mode.

Choose Normal Mode, and then click Uninstall. A dialog box will come up with a progress bar that indicates how much of it has been removed from your computer. This may take some time, so be patient. When it is done removing Avast, you can close Revo Uninstaller. Be sure to run your own antivirus program after uninstalling Avast!
