Making sure this never happens again

The ten-minute setup that turns a future lockout into a minor inconvenience.

Before you start: For your own devices and accounts.

Almost every lockout on this site traces back to one of three gaps: no backup, no access to the account the phone is tied to, and no recovery method set up. Ten minutes now closes all three.

Set up recovery before you need it

  1. iPhone: turn on iCloud Backup, and add a Recovery Contact and/or a Recovery Key (Settings > your name > Sign‑In & Security). Confirm you know your Apple Account password.
  2. Android: turn on Google One backup and Google Photos sync, and add a recovery phone and recovery email to your Google Account.
  3. Samsung: sign in to a Samsung Account and switch on Find My Mobile — it is the one remote unlock that can save your data on a Galaxy.
  4. Write down which account each device is signed in to. That single fact is what most locked-out people are missing.

Make the backup real, not theoretical

A backup you have never verified is a guess. Open your cloud backup from a browser once and confirm the date and that photos are actually there.

Keep at least one recovery method that does not live only on the phone itself — a recovery email you can open elsewhere, or a recovery key stored somewhere safe.
