What a repair shop can and cannot do for a locked phone
5 minute read · beginner
Repair shops fix hardware and can walk you through the same official resets you could do yourself. They cannot lawfully remove Activation Lock or Factory Reset Protection from a phone that still belongs to someone else, and a shop that claims otherwise is a risk, not a repair.
What a legitimate shop can do
- Replace screens, batteries and charging ports — useful when a broken port or dead screen is what stops you reaching recovery mode or a computer restore.
- Walk you through official resets and restores.
- Help you prepare the evidence a carrier or manufacturer will ask for.
What no legitimate shop can do
- Tell you your forgotten passcode, or remove it while keeping your data.
- Remove Activation Lock or Google Factory Reset Protection from an account that is not yours.
- SIM-unlock a phone the carrier has not released.
"Unlock any iCloud, 30 minutes, cash only" is not a repair. It is a risk to the device, and sometimes to you.
What to bring
If you want help that involves a carrier or manufacturer, bring what professionals ask for: the receipt, screenshots of your account taken on a computer, and an IMEI that matches the phone in your hand.
Stop and get help when
- The shop offers to remove an account lock or passcode without the account's credentials.
- The shop wants cash for an unlock the carrier or manufacturer provides free.
Official route
Apple Support, Google or the manufacturer's authorised service, and your carrier for network locks.
Who this is for: You must own the phone. Bring proof.
