Verizon Device Unlock Guide
Comprehensive overview of Verizon's 60-day automatic unlock policy, exemptions, and international travel implications.
Verizon Unlock Policy (2026 Requirements)
Verizon operates under unique FCC requirements originating from the Block C spectrum auction. Currently, Verizon enforces an automatic, time-based locking mechanism to deter fraud and theft during the initial purchase period.
| Purchase Source | Unlock Condition | Action Required |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon Store / Online | Locked for 60 Days from activation | None. Automatically unlocks on day 60. |
| Authorized Retailer (e.g., Best Buy) | Locked for 60 Days from activation | None. Automatically unlocks on day 60. |
| Military Deployment | Immediate exception available | Contact Verizon Support with deployment orders. |
Important Note: This 60-day rule applies regardless of whether the device is paid in full at the time of purchase or financed. Unlike other carriers, the device does not need to be completely paid off to be unlocked, provided it is not flagged for fraud or non-payment.
Steps to Verify a Verizon Unlock
Because the process is fully automated, there are no codes to enter. To verify the unlock has occurred:
- Wait 60 Days: Ensure 60 days have passed since the original activation date.
- Insert Non-Verizon SIM: Power down the device, insert an active SIM card from a different carrier (e.g., T-Mobile, AT&T), and power back on.
- Check Signal: If the device connects to the new network and can place a call, it is unlocked. iPhones will usually prompt an "Activation Required" screen that completes over Wi-Fi, signifying the updated policy has been fetched.
If your device does not unlock after 60 days automatically, contact Verizon Customer Support at 1-800-922-0204 or via the My Verizon app.
