Official owner path for a locked iPhone 14: confirm the Apple Account, check iCloud for a backup, then erase with Find My or restore from a computer. This does not bypass Activation Lock, stolen status, or a carrier SIM lock.

  1. Step 01

    Decide whether you can still reach the phone

    On a iPhone 14, a forgotten passcode is not something Apple will read back to you. If Find My is on and the phone can see Wi-Fi or cellular, you can erase it from iCloud on another device. If it is offline, you will need a Mac or PC and a cable.

  2. Step 02

    Check for a backup before you erase

    Open iCloud.com on a computer, or check a Mac that used to sync this iPhone. Photos in iCloud, messages in iCloud, and a dated iCloud backup are the difference between an annoyance and a bad week. Local Finder / iTunes backups only exist if you made them while the phone was unlocked.

  3. Step 03

    Erase online with Find My

    Sign in at iCloud.com or the Find My app with the Apple Account that owns this iPhone 14. Pick the device, choose Erase This Device, and wait until Apple confirms the erase reached the phone. You will set it up as new, then restore a backup if you have one.

    Erasing does not remove Activation Lock. You still need that Apple Account (or the previous owner) on the Hello screen.

  4. Step 04

    Erase offline with a computer

    Connect the iPhone 14 to a Mac (Finder) or a PC with Apple Devices / iTunes. Put it in recovery mode using Apple’s current button sequence for this chassis — side button plus volume on Face ID phones, home plus power on SE with Touch ID. Choose Restore, not Update, if the passcode is the problem.

  5. Step 05

    If you see Activation Lock after the restore

    That is working as designed. Enter the Apple Account and password that were on the phone. Forgot the password? Recover the account at iforgot.apple.com — do not buy a “bypass.” Apple will not honor a bypassed device, and neither will a carrier.

  6. Step 06

    eSIM after an erase

    On iPhone 14, a wipe usually deletes the eSIM. Have the carrier app or a QR ready, or use the previous iPhone’s eSIM transfer if both devices still belong to you. Physical SIM trays, where they exist, still need the carrier’s unlock policy if the phone is financed.

  7. Step 07

    Disabled from too many passcode tries

    The on-screen timer is not a hint. The official path is still an erase. There is no supported way to sit through the lockout and then guess.

After the reset

  • Restore from the latest iCloud or Finder backup — check the date first.
  • Sign in with the same Apple Account, then wait for Photos and iCloud Drive.
  • Re-add the eSIM from the carrier or from your previous iPhone.
  • Turn Find My back on before you put the phone in a bag.

Things that catch people

  • iPhone 14 still needs the Apple Account after a restore. That is Activation Lock, not a defect.
  • iCloud.com erase only works if Find My was enabled and the device is reachable — or the erase queues until it is.
  • We do not publish passcode bypasses, FRP exploits, or Activation Lock “removal.” Those are not owner paths.
  • A used phone that asks for someone else’s account is not yours to reset around. Return it or get the seller to release it.
