Moving an eSIM without losing the number
Do the new phone first, or the old phone last — never both in a hurry in a parking lot.
On iPhone-to-iPhone, Quick Transfer works when both devices are yours, nearby, and signed into the right Apple Account. Follow the on-screen handoff and do not wipe the old phone until the new one shows bars.
Android varies by carrier. Many want their app or a QR from a store chat. Some still ship a physical SIM if you ask.
If the old phone is already locked, you cannot authorize a transfer from it. Call the carrier with the IMEI of both devices and the account PIN. They can often push a new eSIM to the device you still control.
Travel eSIMs are unrelated to a carrier lock. You can have a locked US phone that still accepts a travel eSIM on the second slot — or not, depending on the carrier. Check before you fly.
